A Better Mid-South: Concerns over de-annexation bill

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Editorial by Tracey Rogers, Vice President and General Manager of WMC Action News 5:

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland is sounding the alarm about a proposed bill in the Tennessee legislature that would allow communities to de-annex themselves from larger cities like Memphis.

Mayor Strickland is concerned this could devastate the city and I agree. We need to fight this bill.

According to the Mayor, if every eligible community voted to de-annex, Memphis could lose more than 100 thousand residents and 80 million dollars in tax revenue. We would end up hurting ourselves more in the long run.

Mayor Strickland said he is open to looking at a smaller footprint for the city of Memphis, but he would want to do it collaboratively and not create a crisis in the process. That's the kind of thinking we need in situations like this.

What do you think about this bill? Let me hear your opinion by email at abettermidsouth@wmctv.com, or post a message on my Facebook page, A Better Mid-South.

Keeping our large cities intact and allowing area cities and communities to work on these issues together will make this A Better Mid-South.
