MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Students from Christian Brothers University will join "industrial strength" river clean-up organization Living Lands & Waters, and founder Chad Pregracke, to clean up trash in McKellar Lake on Saturday.
Growing up along the banks of the Mississippi River, Pregracke worked as a commercial shell diver, sometimes spending 10 hours a day in the pitch black waters.
Frustrated by the river's neglect, at the age of 17, he decided to clean it up.
Twenty-two years later, Pregracke and his Living Lands & Waters crew have organized more than 800 cleanups on 23 rivers in 20 states, including an annual pilgrimage to McKellar Lake, in Memphis, TN.
CNN named Pregracke '2013 Hero of the Year' for his work.
CBU student volunteers will join Pregracke at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, March 12 at McKellar Lake.
Next month, Pregracke will return to Memphis to speak at the eleventh annual Dr. Gerard A. Vanderhaar Symposium, held Thursday, April 21, 2016 from 7 p.m.–9 p.m. in the University Theater at Christian Brothers University, 650 East Parkway South, Memphis, TN 38104.
The event is free and open to the public.
