MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Police are investigating a shooting that killed a 15-year-old girl at a South Memphis apartment complex early Monday morning.

It happened on Hillview Avenue in the Valley Forge Apartments.

Police said Vianca Harris,15, was shot just after 1 a.m. and died from her injuries.

Terry Turner, 24, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Police later found out that Harris was four-to-five weeks pregnant.

According to the affidavit, a witness saw Turner take a shotgun out of the closet and shoot Harris in the head.

Turner told police Harris shot herself. He said Harris was playing with the gun and he tried to take it away from her when the gun fired and a bullet hit her in the back of the head.

Police said additional charges in connection to the death of the unborn child are pending.

A number of Vianca's friends and family members took to Facebook, expressing their disbelief over the incident and posting pictures of the young girl.

According to her Facebook page, Harris was an actor, a fashion model, and a dancer with a bright future. But those plans were all cut short Monday morning.

"It's really sad what happened to that 15-year-old girl losing her life," neighbor Yolanda Grove said .

Memphis Police Department said several people at the apartment complex were detained and questioned. Turner was the only one that stayed in custody.

Neighbors said Harris was visiting a friend at Valley Forge Apartments when she was shot.

"They don't understand how she came to visit someone and ended up dead," Grove said.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting yet, but neighbors said it all began with an altercation inside the apartment.

"Someone got stabbed in the arm and cut really bad," Grove said.

It's a life taken away too soon, a family forced to grieve, and police left to sort it all out.

"It's very sad. Very devastating. I really hate that," Grove said.
