QUITMAN COUNTY, MS (WMC) - The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Quitman County, Mississippi.
The NWS initially reported a levee breach, but has since clarified, saying the flooding is due to a backup of natural water moving into Marks.
According to the NWS, the flooding has put the town of Marks and the surrounding areas several feet deep.
The National Weather Service is asking people in the flooded areas to evacuate and seek higher ground.
However, WMC Action News 5 Chief Meteorologist Ron Childers spoke to Quitman County EMA and confirmed there was no levee break and no flash flooding in the area. There is flooding in the area as a result of the heavy rain from last week and the weekend, but it is confined east of the town in a mainly rural area and not in the town of Marks. According to Quitman County EMA, the water is not rising and there is no eminent threat to life or property.
The warning is still in effect until 11 p.m.
