Inaugural "Rock the Runway" scholarship event features local fashion designers

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A new fashion show is coming to Memphis for emerging designers and fashionistas.

The Memphis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will present "Rock the Runway" from 4 to 7 p.m. April 10 at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts.

Memphis native Brandice Henderson-Daniel will share her lifestyle brand, "Harlem's Fashion Row," which is dedicated to showcasing new talent of color
in fashion.

"Harlem's Fashion Row" has gained support from Pandora Jewelry, Target and Fashion Institute of Technology.

Local emerging designers will share the runway with New York fashion designer Kimberly Goldson, a finalist on Lifetime's Project Runway.

Goldson premiered her collection at New York Fashion Week.

The show will support the Maggie McDowell Scholarship fund, which supports the dream of higher education for well-deserving teens.

Over the last five years, Memphis Alumnae Chapter has raised more than $240,000 to support the Maggie McDowell Scholarship fund.

Each year, about 40 high school seniors receive much-needed funds to help reduce college expenses.

"So often, Memphis does not recognize the sheer magnitude of the talent that this city has cultivated," event chair Beverly
Robertson said. "'Rock the Runway' not only gives us the opportunity to recognize a native Memphian, but also allows us the opportunity to promote an emerging designer of color, because less than one percent of designers in major department stores are designers of color."

Celebrity models include: Gina Ervin (celebrity chef/TV host), Chef Aryen Moore-Alston ( Food Network Star, Season 10), Oona Mitchell (co-owner of
Royal Studios), Chef Kenna (Hell's Kitchen, Season 15), Juanika Ellis (wife of Indiana Pacers NBA player Monta Ellis), Moziah Bridges (teen CEO/designer of Mo's Bows), Kim Perry (wife of retired NBA player Elliot Perry) and Shekinah Young (wife of Brooklyn Nets NBA player Thaddeus Young).

Attendees will have a chance to "meet and greet" with the designers and shop the MAC Marketplace to buy items featured on the runway.

Doors open at 4 p.m. Showtime is 5 p.m.

Tickets for "Rock the Runway" are $40 in advance, $50 at the door. Tickets may be purchased from members of the Memphis Alumnae Chapter or online here.
