MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis police officers came to the rescue when someone stole the tires off a woman's car in a neighborhood near Hickory Hill and Knight Arnold roads.
The theft happened before 7 a.m. on Mission Ridge Road.
Ridgeway Station Task Force officers working a Blue CRUSH detail searched the area trying to find the person who stole the tires off the car.
A mile away, officers spotted Jovon Brooks, 19, trying to put the stolen tires on his car. Brooks was arrested and charged with theft of property.
The victim was overjoyed as the four wheels stolen from her car were recovered.
"She actually did break down and cry," officer William Vrooman said. "I know myself and my partner-- you almost get choked up seeing something like that as well."
Vrooman and Jacob Minor traded their weapons for wrenches once they returned the tires. They played mechanic after catching the suspected thief Thursday morning. They brought the tires back to the victim and helped her put them back on her car.
"We have an elderly woman, of course we're going to go above and beyond. Whatever we can for her," Vrooman said.
"That's one of the best parts about this job; getting to help people in need when you can," officer Jacob Minor said.
In spite of all the attention the photo has received on social media, their boss said it was just another day on the job for the officers.
"They do it on a daily basis and you know, I'm glad we're able to give them that type of recognition because it is a daily thing that they do," MPD Major John Williams said.
