MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Homeowners are taking to the streets after they said a rezoning plan is threatening their neighborhood.
"What was once a serene area will now become a very noisy and busier area," Donna Smith said.
Homeowners like Smith said they are protesting a multi-million dollar development.
Parkside at Shelby Farms proposes garden style and highrise apartments with professional and medical officers on almost 55 acres.
The Land Use Control Board has already approved the plan; the next step is city council.
If the plan is approved, trees and shrubs in the area will be turned into commercial or mixed-use property.
"We already have a lot of apartments in this area," Smith said. "The traffic will be horrendous. I drive on Farm Road from work and it usually takes me 20 minutes to get through there; the traffic is stacked up."
Smith said planners said they would widen the two-lane roads around the property.
"But I call it a band aid patch; they're just going to widen the areas that accommodate them."
Smith said they will speak up for as long as they have to to keep their neighborhood from becoming a grid lock.
