MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man is dead after an attempted robbery in the Avery Park Apartments Saturday.
Officers said they were called to the apartment complex in the 2500 block of Elms Court around 8:25 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers found a 26-year-old man lying on the floor with several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said a preliminary investigation revealed that a man tried to break into the victim's home and rob him.
"I just can't imagine he's gone," friend Jamill Johnson said. "It was somebody that was watching him."
Crime scene tape covered children's toys at the spot the man was killed. Johnson said the victim was inside his home watching his children when he was shot.
"They're going to wonder, 'where is my father?'" Johnson said. "That really hurt, knowing that his kids were here at the time. The only thing he wanted to do was take care of his kids."
A downstairs neighbor said as a grandmother, seeing crime scene tape stopped her heart.
"That bullet could've come down and killed one of my babies," she said.
The woman, who did not want to be identified, said she is now planning to move.
"You don't know when a bullet will come through that door or wall and kill you. You ain't safe at home."
Johnson said he does not feel safe either.
"It don't feel safe out here so now I have to watch for me and my little girl. The killer is still out here."
As of now, no arrests have been made.
