OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC) - Olive Branch police are still investigating the death of a 81-year-old man found dead Saturday night.
Neighbors said the victim, Billy Garrett, was a sweet and gentle man who loved everyone in the neighborhood.
Police said Garrett's grandson, 30-year-old Kevin Garrett, is charged with his grandfather's murder.
"It's really hard," neighbor Jake Willcoxon said. "I just wish it could have gone differently. He didn't deserve the way things happened."
Olive Branch police said Billy Garrett was found dead in a utility room with severe head injuries. Police were called to the home after a family member reported a fight that left the man unconscious.
"He loved people," neighbor Angie Willcoxon said. "He wanted to be out. Wanted to be doing. Wanted to get to know people."
Within the past two years, neighbors said Billy Garrett was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, a disease his wife died from years before.
Neighbors said Kevin moved in with him to be his primary caretaker.
"It was very, very tragic that such a wonderful person had to leave this world like that," Willcoxon said.
Neighbors are still in shock about what happened in the home but hope the man they know as Mr. Billy's happy memories will be the ones that live on.
"I just try to remember him the way he was and his spirit," Willcoxon said.
Kevin Garrett is in jail on a $250,000 bond.
