MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Spring is officially here for the Memphis Tigers football team.
The squad held their first practice of the Spring Tuesday, kicking off the new era of Mike Norvell as head coach.
Norvell, 34, is one of the youngest head coaches in the NCAA, and he is inheriting a team full of veterans that delivered the best two-year run in school history.
The Tigers went 29-7 the last two years with Paxton Lynch at quarterback. Lynch is heading to the NFL Draft, which leaves a glaring hole in the Tigers offense.
Riley Ferguson, a transfer and Junior College All-American, will be battling Brady Davis, a redshirt sophomore and Prep All-Star from Starkville High School, for the position.
"The guy that we had leading this football team for the last three years was a special player," Norvell said. "A guy that's going to hear his name called very early in the NFL Draft, so we know we've got some big shoes to fill. But the guys we have competing, I'm really pleased with what I've seen from them here so far this Spring."
