MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Some people are using what seems like harmless toys to ship some dangerous drugs directly to Memphis. A postal worker stopped at least one cute teddy bear that was carrying more than hugs with it.
There are a lot of restrictions on what you can and cannot ship, such as liquids, fragile objects, perishables, and breakables, but all those didn't stop one man from walking into an Ohio mail center and trying to ship a teddy bear stuffed with more than just cotton.
The bear was stuffed with drugs and addressed to a home in Memphis.
"She noticed it was heavy and it seemed odd to her," Whitehall, Ohio, Police Department Sergeant John Grebb said.
Grebb said the clerk at the mail center thought it was strange that the children's toy weighed so much. She also thought it was strange that the man didn't have the bear boxed.
"So when she went to box it, she decided to tear the bear open. She found a bottle...filled with liquid codeine," Grebb said.
Investigators said this drug, mixed with soft drinks like Sprite, is known as Purple Drank on the streets, and is gaining popularity.
"It is used illegally as kind of a party drug," Grebb said.
The owner of the Mail Center in Midtown said many clerks use instincts to ensure that what patrons bring in to ship is legal and safe.
"You want to make sure that thing is not hazardous and is not going to hurt someone," Mail Center owner Mark Weber said.
Police said they do not have a good description of the man accused of shipping the bear and they are still investigating.
Detectives believe the man may continue to try and send drugs, so they are asking delivery services to call police if they receive any suspicious packages.
