MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The number of murders is up nearly 50 percent from 2014, but Wednesday, dozens of people came together to pray for city and county leaders.
Christ United Methodist Church led the effort.
Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell joined Arms Around Memphis. He said he believed it was a way to bring unity to the county.
"We are praying for them every day of the year. This is a way for us to specially say to them, 'thank you,' and 'you've got folks thinking about you,'" organizer Shane Stanford said.
The group meets every Wednesday to pray for people.
Last week, Pastor Dr. Shane Stanford led a group of people in prayer for fire and police departments.
