MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Nationwide’s slogan, “Nationwide is on your side,” took a different meaning Thursday morning after a truck slammed into the side of its building near the intersection of Poplar Avenue and Mendenhall Road.

The crash happened around 6:30 a.m.

WMC Action News 5 crews found the truck halfway inside a Nationwide Insurance agency.

“We’re just glad no one was hurt,” Rick Sieger, with Nationwide Insurance, said.

According to Sieger, the truck was going westbound on Poplar. The driver fell asleep at the wheel, clipping a telephone pole. He then went diagonally across the street and jumped over a curb, causing a huge hole in the side of the building.

“It’s worse than I thought, but it’s not as bad as it could be,” Sieger said.

Sieger said nobody was working when the accident happened.

The driver took a brick and broke a hole in the side window of the building to get outside, according to Sieger.

Police said the driver had minor injuries.

“It’s much better when it’s your office, than when it’s your house,” Sieger said.

Despite the crash, Nationwide stayed open for business. The company plans on putting up a temporary wall until a permanent one can be built.
