Man charged with burning girlfriend's son with hot water

Man accused of severely burning child

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man is behind bars after he was accused of severely burning a 4-year-old.

According to the police report, the 4-year-old's mother took him to the hospital on March 24. He had severe burns on both of his legs.

Police said the child peed his pants on March 23, and Jalil Mitchell whipped him with a belt. Mitchell then told the boy to take off his clothes while he ran a bath for him to clean himself.

Mitchell then went to the kitchen to make food and told the boy to get in the tub.  When he got out of the tub, his feet and lower legs were discolored and blistering. Mitchell put cocoa butter and gauze on the burns, but it did not help.

Police said the boy had third-degree burns, which will require surgery. He is currently in an Ohio hospital receiving treatment.

"No! That is inhuman treatment," neighbor Margret Simmons said. "No, no no. Not even for an animal."

According to the report, Mitchell, the mother's boyfriend, was solely in charge of the child while his mother was at work. The child went untreated for 17 hours before his mother took him to the hospital.

"I always tell--and even when I would tell my daughter--my son in law: Do not punish your child when you are angry, because you might get carried away," Simmons said.

Mitchell is charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated child neglect, and aggravated child endangerment.
