MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

An 11-year-old girl was shot at a Memphis apartment complex Friday afternoon.

Police said it appears the girl was accidentally shot by another child, who was playing with the gun.

The girl was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition.

Memphis Police Department said the girl was shot just before 12 p.m. near the intersection of Winchester Road and Lake Park Drive, just east of Memphis International Airport. Police said the child does not live in the apartment complex where she was shot.

Police went in and out of apartment buildings Friday afternoon asking people about what happened. Early reports suggested the child was shot in a drive-by shooting, but police now believe those reports to be false.

Police said the girl was shot in the mid-section of her body and is in critical condition at Le Bonheur.

Neighbors said children have been playing outside in the neighborhood all week because of spring break.

"It's horrible people these days don't have a care for nothing but themselves," a neighbor said. "If I had the money, I would leave."
