MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A man is behind bars after police said he pulled a gun on a store clerk while trying to steal a beer.

According to the police report, the clerk said 27-year-old Nickolas Echols came into the store on East Holmes Road on Saturday night. The clerk said Echols then asked another customer to hold the door open while he stole a beer.

Echols then walked to the cooler, grabbed a 32-ounce beer and ran toward the door. The clerk locked the door before Echols could leave.

The clerk said Echols put the beer on top of a stand-alone freezer and he went to go grab it. Echols pushed him, and the clerk pushed Echols back. Then, the clerk said Echols grabbed a gun from his waistband, pointed it at him and said "Open the door and give me the beer, or I'm gong to kill you."

The clerk jumped behind the counter and called police.

Two witnesses said Echols pointed the gun at them as well. They ran to the cooler at the back of the store.

When police arrived, they told the clerk to unlock the door. Echols ran out with the gun in his hand.

Officers subdued Echols and grabbed the gun, which had two live rounds in the chamber.

Echols is charged with aggravated assault. He is in jail on a $25,000 bond.
