MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A mother is grieving after her son was shot and killed in Whitehaven on Monday afternoon.
"Lord Jesus help me," Luevenia Johnson said. "It hurts so bad. I never thought it would happen to me."
Police believe the 24-year-old victim, who family identified as LaDavid Pegues, was killed during an attempted robbery. Officers said the victim was shot in the chest while sitting in a car, then dumped into the street.
Police took him to the hospital in critical condition where he later died. Police believe it was a setup robbery.
Johnson was distraught following her son's death. She said she wants to find the people responsible for killing her son.
"I hate to vision that he was lying in the street gone and I saw him not even 40 minutes ago," she said.
Police are still searching for the two men responsible. Pegues said her son was a father-to-be and was working to turn his life around.
"[He] got to hanging with the other crowd and wandered away," Johnson said.
Johnson said her son, LaDavid, had dreams of going to college. She is begging anyone with information to come forward.
"I don't care if you just tell them what kind of car they were driving, what it look like, just say something, because if it was your child, you would want someone to say something."
If you know where the suspects may be, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
"I don't want them to kill anyone else or murder anyone else's child," Johnson said.
