MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A 3-year-old boy is in non-critical condition after police said someone shot at the boy's father, missed, and hit the little boy.
The shooting happened in Parkway Village around 1:45 p.m. on Friday, near the intersection of Wooddale Avenue and Boxdale Street.
Police said a man approached the boy and his father as they were walking, pulled a gun, and shot at them. That's when the boy was hit.
The child was taken to the fire station at 3909 Knight Arnold Road. From there, the child was rushed to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
"I heard like doors slamming. I thought maybe it was cars hitting. Then I heard screaming. The screams lasted about 30 seconds or so. They were blood curdling," witness Nichole Scobey said.
Scobey came outside and saw people at the fire station across from where she works.
"It made me a little unsettled because I didn't know what was going on," Scobey said.
Police canvassed the area asking questions and trying to find out who shot the boy.
"They asked did I hear anything. I did not hear anything and they asked did I see anything, a white car, like a white sedan," Durleen Lofton said.
Lofton did see the white sedan. Police are looking for a white Mercury Grand Marquis.
There was a white sedan at the fire station driven by the father.
Police took one person into custody at the scene, but after questioning that person they released him/her.
Police said they are still trying to figure out who shot the 3-year-old.
