MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A person was shot in the Castalia Heights neighborhood in Memphis.

Memphis Police Department said the victim is in critical condition.

The shooting happened around 5:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of Keltner Circle. Police completely shut down the street after the shooting: something neighbors said is becoming a common occurrence.

"I don't ever let my son play outside,” L.A. Davis said.

Davis said she always tries to keep her 6-year-old Tayquon close by.

"My first year I moved here, I saw someone get killed right in front of me,” she said.

Family members said the man shot was an 18- or 19-year-old man. They said he was shot while trying to break up an argument between some other men.

Three weeks ago, Richard Thomas was shot and killed on Keltner Circle. His girlfriend, Betty Harris, is charged with second-degree murder.

Neighbors said they hear gunshots almost daily and believe something drastic needs to be done to address the violence.

“We're going to keep losing our children,” Davis said.

The owner of most of the apartments on Keltner Circle said he would like the city to make it a controlled-access street.
