GERMANTOWN, TN (WMC) -

A football coach and special education teacher was fired just before spring break, according to Germantown Police Department.

GPD said Houston Middle School Coach LeRico Mathis exchanged inappropriate text messages with an eighth grade student. According to the high school’s website, Mathis is a defensive backs coach and works with the high school team as well.

Parents are just finding out about the allegations, and many feel like they should have been told earlier.

"Yeah I think it was the right thing to let him go,” Matt Proctor said. “It's messed up.”

"Just wanting to know what is going on of course in the realm of where my child is every day,” one parent said.

GPD investigated these allegations and turned their findings over to the Department of Children’s Services. No criminal charges have been filed against him at this time. In a statement, they said:

“The Germantown Police Department received a complaint regarding Houston Middle School teaching assistant Lerico Mathis on February 25th, 2016. The complaint involved allegations of inappropriate texting between Mr. Mathis and an underage student. An investigation into this matter yielded no criminal charges. As part of our investigation a referral was made to the Tennessee Department of Child Services. Pursuant to Tennessee law this report will be maintained as confidential.”

According to the Houston High School football website, Mathis, a Biloxi, Mississippi, native, went to University of Memphis where he played for the Tigers as a defensive back. Mathis spent three years as the defensive backs coach at ECS before he was hired at Houston High School and Middle School.
