A fight between two roommates ended with one of them in the hospital and the other in jail, but the one in the hospital is defending his attacker.

"I know he really regrets it and didn't mean to do it," the injured roommate said.

Police said the two roommates started fighting at their apartment on Adams Avenue between Manassas Street and Orleans Street on Tuesday night. During the fight, one of the roommates stabbed the other with a knife.

The injured roommate spoke with WMC Action News 5 after he was discharged from the hospital, but he did not want to reveal his identity.

He said he and his roommate got into an argument over money. When the argument escalated, he picked up a vase.

"I put the vase down, and he kind of poked me with the knife," the injured roommate explained. "I grabbed it and cut myself with the knife."

David Hardaway is in jail charged with aggravated assault.

"I specifically told the officers that I did not want to press charges, and I felt like he was just defending himself," the injured roommate said. "We've been great roommates and everything is going well."

He said he forgives Hardaway and plans to bail him out of jail.

"I know that he didn't know what he did, because after the fact he said sorry and broke down in tears," the injured roommate said. "[He] didn't ever mean to harm me in any type of way."
