NASHVILLE, TN (WMC) -

The Tennessee House of Representatives unanimously approved a bill Wednesday that provides additional support for children of military service members who die in uniform.

House Bill 1407, sponsored by House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick (R-Chattanooga), provides the chance for children to receive in-state tuition who have lost a military parent as the result of a targeted attack on Tennessee soil.

Students receiving the tuition may choose to use this assistance at any public postsecondary institution.

The legislation is in direct response to last summer's attacks in Chattanooga on two military installations that left four Marines dead. The bill is aimed at ensuring any future victims and their families are served.

"Our great state was shaken by last summer's attacks, but our sorrow pales in comparison to the loss felt by the victims' families. That is why I brought forward this legislation," said McCormick. "It is our duty as a state to do everything in our power to care for these families who have given so much to Tennessee."

The Senate passed the bill earlier this session. It is now awaiting Governor Bill Haslam's signature.
