MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A Memphis police officer shot at a dog after the dog bit him.

Police said the officer was bitten while checking a residential burglary alarm in the 900 block of Hudson Street just before 10 a.m.

Investigators said the bullet fired from the officer's gun did not hit the dog, a Labrador-mix. The dog is fine.

Neighbors said the incident happened so fast.

"We heard some gunshots," neighbor Demetric James said. "People always say they won't bite, but if they got teeth, they'll bite."

Neighbors said they don't blame the officer for shooting at the dog.

"You got to protect yourself first," Gregory Berry said.

People who are familiar with the dog said it is not usually aggressive.

"Usually locked up, just bark. I've never seen it out," Berry said.

"They don't never run up on nobody," said James.

The dog is being quarantined at the Memphis Animal Shelter.

The officer, who is now recovering after a bite to his lower leg, fired only one shot, according to police.

Police said the Memphis Animal Shelter issued a citation to the dog's owner for allowing the dog to run freely. Neighbors said it's a lesson learned for the homeowner.

"Build a bigger gate or keep him on a leash or inside," Berry said.
