MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Three teens tried to steal from a Memphis police officer's home.

"Generally speaking, it's not a good idea to break inside of an officer's home," neighbor Mark Christopher said.

Wednesday, police found three teens searching through officer Scotty Triplett's garage. They caught one of them, but the other two got away.

"It just shows nobody is immune to being a victim of a crime. Even a police officer,"Triplett's wife Fran said.

Fran said her two children were home when the break-in happened.

"To have people come in and sort of invade your home and your territory, it's scary for children," Fran said.

Fran said brazen crimes like this could be a result of the current officer shortage in Memphis.

"Fewer officers patrolling the streets, fewer officers being able to handle calls, and more criminals knowing they can commit crimes," Fran said, explaining reasons she said Memphis needs to fill its officer job openings.

Fran said she's thankful her neighbor saw the break-in and called police. She also said she had a message for the teens that got away.

"If you break the law, eventually it will catch up with you, and you will get caught," Fran said.
