MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Several stained glass windows at St. Michael Catholic Church are boarded up, but food will soon help fill the void.

"We're having a BBQ contest to raise money for the school and the church," said alum Matt Reisinger.

Reisinger and others organized the first annual "Panther Invitational BBQ Contest."

It will feature food and entertainment, as well as arts and crafts, and is set for this Saturday on the grounds of the landmark Summer Avenue church.

"All the restaurants on Summer Avenue, they've all stepped up,” said Reisinger.

Reisinger started planning the event after seeing a story WMC Action News 5 did days after Christmas.

Two burglaries left broken windows and even a shattered offering box. The windows are the biggest expense.

"They have to be imported from Germany, and so it's about $3,000 per window,” said Reisinger.  “So, we have a hefty goal in front of us to do."

He's convinced this bad deed will result in a giving spirit thanks, in part, to BBQ.
