Flowers and candy are always great gifts for Moms on their special day, but why not join in on one of the hottest, newest trends and take Mom coloring?

This new twist on an old tradition is a fun coloring book event for elderly Moms hosted by Synergy HomeCare of Memphis. The Coloring Club is hosting "Color Mom Happy" on May 4 at the Village of Germantown at 7820 Horse Circle in Germantown. The colorful event gets underway at 11 a.m.

Senior Moms are invited to color with caregivers and family members, as well as take part in a fun raffle to win special coloring books and supplies.

Coloring is a new trend among younger adults, but research shows coloring has big health benefits for the elderly, too.

A study by the National Endowment for the Arts found adults 65 and older who participated in creative activities, such as coloring, made fewer trips to the doctor and had fewer health problems than their counterparts who didn't participate in such activities.

Art therapists said the creativity of coloring can promote enhanced joint health and flexibility. Research also shows coloring works similar to meditation -- blocking out negative thoughts and improving mood, which is especially helpful for those suffering from depression or loneliness.

Synergy HomeCare "Senior Coloring Club" encourages Moms and their families to bond over coloring books.

Sygergy HomeCare has created specially designed coloring sheets for the Mother's Day Coloring Club. They are free to download on the Syngergy website here.
