MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Doctors have confirmed six measles cases in Shelby County. That puts Shelby County with more cases than the rest of the United States combined. Wednesday, the department released locations of potential measles exposure.

"It's just scary and we haven't heard about the measles in a long time. So, it's something to think," Linda Shaw said.

Shaw is a Shelby County resident and, like others, is concerned about the measles outbreak currently impacting the county. She is right, however. Not too long ago, health officials thought measles had been eradicated in the United States. Now, there are 10 cases in the United States, with six of them being in Shelby County.

Shelby County Health Department said it is in "outbreak mode," to make sure these cases do not spread. They said the first case in the county started April 1 with a fever.

"If you have a fever, runny nose, or those kind of things, you should stay home, not go to public places where you are going to expose others. If your children are sick again, you should keep them home," health officials said.

Other symptoms include a dry cough and a sore throat.

During a news conference, health officials said most children are inoculated against the measles. The vaccine is more than 90 percent effective in preventing the virus. Another way to be immune is if you actually had the virus.

Part of the hard work SCHD is doing is tracking down all the places infected people went to while they were possibly contagious.

County leaders identified more than a dozen places where people may have been exposed. One of those locations was at the Goodwill in Millington. That concerned shoppers like Gracie Gonzales.

"It's just hard because a lot of people who don't have money come and shop here. They buy coats and somebody had measles or something, you could pick it up," Gonzales said.

You can find the list of locations below, or at this website.

If you or your child(ren) were at any of the locations on this list during the times indicated, you may have been exposed to measles. In that case, click here to learn what to do.
