Biker Dad: Shamed biker mom planning motorcycle rally for kids

Corpus Christi, TX (WMC) -

Since I first wrote about Mallory Torres and her family, their story has spread around the world. It was picked up by the Today Show, Glenn Beck's website, "The Blaze" and countless newspapers and television stations from Tennessee to Germany. The story blew up on the internet after Torres' social media shaming for letting her 7-year-old daughter ride on the back of her boyfriend's motorcycle...then her passionate response to the haters.

Torres and boyfriend John Hays II of Corpus Christi, Texas, got some backlash after a photo of him riding with the 7-year-old girl on the back of his sport bike was posted on social media. But she fired back on Facebook and has since been getting support from bikers and parents alike, and from all corners of the world.

Now the couple is working on what may be a first of its kind event, one that's shaping up to be a big motorcycle rally. It's a motorcycle rally geared at kids. It will be held in June in Corpus Christi. The event is called, "Kids are Bikers Too."  Just a couple of days after their story made headlines, 400 people have already RSVP'd for the event on their Facebook page. Torres, Hays and other organizers are encouraging riders to come, with their children on the backs of their bikes. But really everyone is welcome, bikers and non-bikers alike. They're asking riders who don't have children to come along and provide rides to kids who don't have biker parents.

Their ideas on children riding on motorcycles may be controversial to some, but they are not illegal. Most states allow children to ride as passengers on motorcycles. In Texas, the minimum age to be a passenger is 5 years old.

Riders from around the world have also been showing support by posting photos on social media of them riding with their children. There have been hundreds of similar photos posted to the Biker Dad page this week in support of the family.

To be clear, I am in no way encouraging everyone with a motorcycle to grab a kid and go for a ride. Motorcycles are dangerous. Whether a child should be a passenger on one depends on tons of factors, including the skill level of the person operating the bike and that of the passenger. Being a passenger on a motorcycle isn't a passive experience like riding in car. Their are entire classes on how to be a good motorcycle passenger. But, most will agree that it's also not fair to shame parents for doing something that's perfectly legal even if you don't agree with it.
