A love triangle led to an attack with a miniature bat at Collierville High School, leaving one teen in the hospital and another behind bars.

Collierville police said the teenagers were fighting over a girl.

"It saddens me, but it doesn't shock me," Stephanie Lancaster said.

Police said a student was dropped off at a usual drop off point in the neighborhood across from the school on Wednesday. Reportedly, another teen drove up shortly after, armed with a miniature bat, and attacked the student.

According to police, other students intervened and took the bat away from the student. However, the student then got into the car and drove toward the student that had been attacked. The student was hit with the car.

The attack sent the teenager to the hospital.

"I don't think anyone thinking rationally is going to do something like that," Caleb Kelsey said.

Both teenagers are 17-year-old males and were fighting over a girl, according to police.

"I think it's very unfortunate he let his emotions take over like that."

Collierville residents said this is more than just a case of boys being boys, and hope the young men learn something from it.

Kelsey has a recommendation for those who find themselves in situations angry enough to attack someone like that.

"Take a breather and breathe, and think through your decisions," Kelsey said.

"Adults need to be on the look out for that, and give students a better outlet for that type of emotions," Lancaster said.
