An armored car ran over a man trying to rob a Regions Bank ATM on Friday, according to Memphis Police Department.

Investigators arrived at the bank located on Austin Peay Highway just before 4 p.m. They taped off the parking lot where the armored car had driven onto the curb.

MPD said one of the men from the armored car was putting money into the ATM when a man came up to him with a handgun and demanded money.

That's when the Brinks employee driving the car hit the gas and ran over the attempted robber.

The attempted robber was taken to Regional Medical Center in non-critical condition.

“I'm happy that he didn't get shot, because he could have easily died,” one bank customer said.

Police said one of the two guards then held the potential robber at gunpoint until officers arrived at the scene.

“The Brinks guy, they have a job to do and it's a dangerous job, but we as citizens shouldn't take it upon ourselves to rob or hurt anyone.”

Customers at the bank said Brinks employees can be sitting ducks at the ATM.

“It doesn't seem like a normal thing to run over someone, but under these circumstances, I can see how that could happen.”

A man in a white pickup truck sped away from the scene. Police believe he would've been the getaway driver had the robbery gone according to plan. The truck may have possibly been struck by the armored car as well.

Police are still searching for the driver of the white pickup truck.
