MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Victims of the Memphis Massacre were honored at the National Civil Rights Museum on Sunday.

On May 1, 1866, racial violence erupted following an altercation between white policemen and black soldiers recently discharged from the Union Army.

Over the next three days, 46 African-Americans and two Caucasians were killed.

“To heal the wounds and bind our hearts in peace as we remember the Memphis Massacre of 1866," NAACP member Madeleine Taylor said.

A historical marker was also unveiled at G.E. Patterson Avenue and Second Street to remember the victims of the massacre.
