MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A LeMoyne-Owen College student living in the dorms was found with a gun after another student alerted police to the presence of the weapon.

“It's very scary for any student to have a gun on campus because anybody can get hurt or get shot," LeMoyne-Owen student Shalonda Campbell said.

Memphis police said a student at LeMoyne-Owen College had a gun in his dorm room Sunday.

According to investigators, Tadarious Abston put a photo on Snapchat showing him and other students with guns on campus. Another student saw it and notified campus security.

Police said after LeMoyne-Owen security officers were notified there might be a gun on campus, they got a key and went into Abston's room. They woke him up from sleeping and questioned him about the gun. He denied having a gun. But security noticed a folded blanket next to Abston. The blanket had a loaded .38 pistol in it.  Security also found 33 bullets.

Abston's friends said he had it for protection in dangerous areas of Memphis.

"It wasn't for no bad reason," student Joshua Cox said.  “He's a very good guy. He works hard. He's quiet. He don't bother nobody."

But police said Abston threatened a security officer.

He told the officer, "I know your face. I'm going to take care of you, know what I mean."

Police said Abston threatened to kill the student who turned him in. Not only was the gun loaded, it was stolen from Devontae Nesbit's car in February. The car was parked in front of his home on North Parkway.

"It ain't good," Nesbitt said. "It's the type of neighborhood we live in."

LeMoyne-Owen students said despite the gun, they feel safe.

"We have security here always. We feel safe here."

In a statement LeMoyne-Owen said the school has a zero tolerance policy for guns on campus.

Tadarious Abston has been expelled from the private college.
