BATESVILLE, MS (WMC) -

A kindergarten student was left on a school bus for three hours Tuesday morning in Batesville, Mississippi.

Police are not sure how the child got left on the bus, but they do not believe there was anything malicious or criminal behind what happened.

Nobody has been charged with a crime.

"It's ridiculous--absolutely ridiculous," Holly Smith said.

Smith is a parent and said just thinking that her child could have been the one left on the bus is enough to make her angry.

"I don't even know what I would do," she said. "I don't even know how I would feel--distraught."

The child was left on the bus at Batesville Middle School.

The school district released the following statement:

"We regret a student being left on a South Panola School District bus this morning after school dropoffs, but we are happy to report the child is safe.

We have taken corrective action and are taking preventative measures to make sure this doesn’t happen again."

Despite the reassurance from the district, parents said it should have never happened in the first place.

"I feel like they don't do lengthy enough background checks on the bus drivers," Smith said.
