A man is behind bars, accused of raping a woman inside a University of Memphis student housing complex.

Police responded to the 3800 block of South Tiger Paw around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The victim told police that Marcus Vaughn raped and touched her without her permission. He then took her underwear.

“I think it's awful,” U of M student Destiny Denton said. “I think it's a place where we're supposed to feel safe.

According to friends, Vaughn is also a student—he enrolled in 2013. Vaughn, 21, later admitted to police that he touched the victim in a sexual manner and took her underwear.

According to arrest records, Vaughn was arrested in 2015 for domestic assault. His friends and neighbors said after trouble with his mother, he moved down the street to live with friends.

After that, he was arrested in March 2015 for aggravated burglary and domestic assault.

“Be cautious of your environment and your surroundings and the people you are surrounding yourself with,” Denton said.

The victim identified Vaughn as the suspect from a six person lineup. He is charged with rape and sexual battery.
