MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A mother of five children who lost everything in a south Memphis house fire is in search of their family pet.

From the outside, you cannot tell how badly burned the Wilkins family home is until you go inside.

"We lost everything and the house they say is a total loss," NaKeisha Wilkins said.

Faulty wiring on a stove may have started the fire.

Wilkin's children range in age from 3 to 19, with one son with autism.

She said she has recently hit hard times.

Thankfully, her children were not home during the fire and were staying with their father while she has been in the hospital with back pain.

Wilkins was released to go home Thursday morning, only for her home to go up in flames before midnight.

Her youngest daughter's father was first on the scene to call 911.

"When I tried to go into the house I could see the fire through the glass so I called the fire department from there," Robert Knox said.

The American Red Cross provided the family with a place to stay for the night.

Friday morning they were back to salvage whatever they could, including their dog.

Knox's son Cameron Thompson said Ma-Ma is a friendly Pit-bull.

"She was not up under the house when I checked under there," Thompson said. "She's a Red Nose, she has some stripes and she's brown and white."

Still holding out hope that Ma-Ma escaped the fire, Thompson is certain he'll see her again.

"She knows how to jump the gate so I think she's gone, so she'll be back I hope," he said.
