MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis Grizzlies General Manger Chris Wallace announced that Dave Joerger will not return as head coach next season.

The announcement was made Saturday.

“After careful consideration, I concluded that a change was needed to foster the strong culture required to achieve sustainable, long-term success for this organization, the city and our fans,” Wallace said. “On behalf of the Grizzlies organization I would like to thank Dave for his work and time in Memphis. We wish Dave and his family all the best and success as he moves forward in his career.”

Joerger began as an assistant coach with the Grizzlies prior to the 2007-08 season. He began his head coaching career with the Grizzlies three years ago, replacing Lionel Hollins in 2013, and led the Grizzlies to a 147-99 record and three NBA Playoff appearances with the Grizzlies.

Grizzlies fans are split on the decision.

"I feel good,” Nicorachi Calvin. “It’s time for something new."

"He did a great job this year with the little bit of talent he had,” Chris Causie said. “But he said he was talking to other teams and I don’t need a coach that doesn’t want to be here."

Following Marc Gasol's injury in February, and the trades of Courtney Lee and Jeff Green, Joerger became increasingly critical of the team, and according to several outlets, had requested for the second time in three seasons, to entertain offers from other teams.

Grizzlies will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.

"We don’t want to see him go; we want him to stay and fight it out,” Vicky Beretta said.

Joerger is already considered the top candidate for the open coaching position in Sacramento.

Some fans are concerned about the vacancy.

"It leaves an absence with the city and the fans because the fans are dedicated to the game,” Beretta said.
