MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Eight accused leaders of a dangerous gang faced a Shelby County judge Monday. That judge will decide whether the eight men will receive bail.

Family and friends of the eight accused Gangster Disciples filled Federal Court on Monday. Each of them hoped the accused gang members would be allowed to receive bond, but that decision will wait until next week after defense attorneys said they needed more time.

The eight accused members of the Gangster Disciples face federal racketeering and drug charges, accused of bringing heroin, cocaine, and marijuana into Mid-South neighborhoods. Some even face murder charges.

"We've put that off in light of some of the proof the government says they are going to introduce at the detention hearing. It's a wiretap case and we want to hear those recordings before," defense attorney Barry McWhirter said.

McWhirter represents Derrick Crumpton and said he is confident he will receive bond.

"He has strong ties to the community. He looks like he's lived here his whole life. He has family here, so hopefully he'll be able to get a bond," McWhirter said.

The arrests came as a result of a two-year investigation into the Gangster Disciples named "Operation 38 Special." The investigation netted 50 arrests across nine states.

Investigators said the arrests were a huge blow to the gang's leadership.

Neither family members nor the prosecution had any comment on the charges against these alleged gang members.
