BATESVILLE, MS (WMC) -

The man accused of being responsible for the burning death of Jessica Chambers is on trial for a different case in Louisiana.

North Mississippi agencies are waiting for their chance to put Quinton Tellis in front of a local jury, which may take longer than expected.

There is no definite answer on when Tellis will be extradited back to Mississippi to face trial. District Attorney John Champion said even though his trial began Monday in Louisiana, it could take more than a month before he’s back.

"They began jury selection this morning,” Panola County Lead Investigator Barry Thompson said.

Tellis is on trial for using the debit card of University of Louisiana-Monroe student Meign-Chen Hsiao last year. Investigators said testimony in this case is set to begin Thursday morning, but could begin as soon as Tuesday.

"It’s good for us. We are ready for them to finish their charges so we can get him back up here,” Thompson said.

Champion believes there could still be a wait before Tellis makes his way back to Mississippi. He said they have already filed a request for a governor’s warrant, which asks the governor to turn Tellis over to Mississippi. He said that cannot happen until the first trial is complete.

If Tellis is convicted in Louisiana, he must be processed and assigned to a facility before he can be extradited, a process that could take at least a month.

"I will be absolutely elated when the trial is over and I can put it behind me,” Thompson said.
