MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A man is behind bars, accused of texting during a crash that critically injured a man walking on Union Avenue.

Suspect Carlos Westbrook was driving a 2008 Chevy Silverado near the intersection of Union Avenue and East Parkway when he drove off of the road, hitting a light pole and a man walking on the sidewalk.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Westbrook stayed on the scene and told police he was reading a text message on his phone when he hit the light pole and the man.

Westbrook is charged with aggravated assault, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, and having no insurance. He submitted to a BAC test, which came back negative.
