MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Someone broke into the Lamar Station post office and ransacked the place early Tuesday morning.

A representative for the post office said someone broke into the office on Trezevant Street between Lamar Avenue and Airways Boulevard between 3:20 and 3:45 a.m., breaking multiple doors and windows.

It is unclear what the person was looking for, as all cash inside the post office remains safely locked up.

"What makes you break into a mail place anyway?" Shaquita Banks asked. "My question is: What do you want to do with our information? It's already fraud going on; you've got scammers hacking."

Banks lives in the area and is asking the same question many are asking after the post office burglary.

"For that to happen here, I don't want to come here," Banks said.

The burglar was caught on surveillance camera, but the representative said the images are poor quality. She can only tell that the burglar was wearing a mask.

"That's the signs of the time," resident James Miller said. "That's the times we're living."

There are no suspects yet, but burglary of a post office is a federal offense. If convicted, the suspect could face up to five years in prison, and that doesn't include time if any mail was opened. That could add additional charges.

The post office will be closed for the rest of the day.
