MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

In less than 30 minutes, city council members approved a $256 million dollar budget for Memphis Police Department.

Interim Police Director Mike Rallings presented the budget to city council members and explained the slight increase from last year's budget is primarily in personnel cost.

Currently, the force is down 171 patrol officers. The budget allows for the funding of two new recruit classes, with 80 officers in each class.

Rallings said the money will also be used on an advertising campaign to recruit new police officers and revamp benefit packages to keep the officers.

"We said we wanted to hire 2,600 police officers and now we are down to the 2,000s, so we are at a critical mass and we have to turn this ship around," Rallings told the council.

Rallings was asked bluntly by Councilwoman Janis Fullilove if Rallings has already applied for the permanent police director position.

Rallings said he has been busy working on the budget, but would apply before the June 17 deadline.
