MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis police officers are hoping to make a difference through boxing.

The officers are working with young people at a gym near the fairgrounds. The program is meant to teach children who are at risk and show them the value of discipline, respect, and hard work.

One teen said his dad suggested the sport.

“It helps get kids off the streets from shooting each other and doing drugs,” 15-year-old Havalacahe Sykes said. “And being in the gym is a way to channel anger, stress and hey, we get a good workout; it's good for you."

“I found all my gifted things in the gym, where I belong,” 13-year-old Seoul Sykes said.

The teens said it provides a good outlet and keeps them away from gangs.
