MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

It's a frightening when two women are robbed by a man with a knife, within a week of each other, all in a gated community.

"I know the man two doors down, he never locks his door," Betty Crawford said. "He said 'I never lock my car door.'"

That's how safe people who live in the neighborhood on Highpoint Terrace near Summer Avenue feel. However, police said a man walked up to a woman in her car Tuesday night and grabbed her purse after he put a knife to her.

It happened at around 8:45 p.m. and the crime has left neighbors in this area shocked.

"I'm shocked. We consider this a fairly safe neighborhood," Veronica Wilson said. "My roommate and I, we've lived here for a year, and we've never heard of anything like that."

The victim cut her hand on the knife and had to be treated at the hospital.

Chilling surveillance video from last week, according to police, shows a robbery and kidnapping in progress. The victim lived in a complex just down from Tuesday night's incident. The woman said a man with a knife tried to rob her and when she said she didn't have any money, he forced her in her car and drove to a nearby ATM on Summer Avenue.

The man grabbed the money and took off.

"It bothers me a little bit," Luke Ledford said. "It makes me think it's the same guy."

Ledford lives across the street from one of the incidents and his area is also in a gated community, just like the other area where the incidents happened.

"I felt safe here the whole time I've lived here," Ledford said. "I've been here for a year and a half now."

Police said they have not at this point connected the two crimes. But, the cases are still under investigation.
