As we head toward summer, you can expect higher energy bills.

This summer, fight the high costs with a secret weapon. Unplug electronics you are not using.

You may not realize it, but most devices and appliances in a typical household are always using power, even when they appear to be off.

Memphis Light Gas and Water Communications Director Gale Jones Carson said the devices are actually in stand-by mode. Some of the biggest violators are plasma televisions, Apple TVs, LG washing machines, coffee makers, and dozens more.

Carson said over a period of time, four to five percent of your energy consumption, month over month comes from these "vampire" devices. They are called this because they suck power and money our of your pocket.

To stop the drain, Carson says unplug electronics when you’re not using them. You can also buy a power strip to group appliances, like TVs, speakers, gaming devices and such, so you can turn them all off at the same time.
