MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

One Memphis community is reeling after a surge in violence in the past few days has left two people dead.

So far in Memphis 82 people have been killed and this week there have been three shootings in Binghampton. Two of those have been deadly.

"Those children will never know their dad and they'll never know what kind of a man that he was," victim's aunt said. "He will be missed."

Charles Keith, 22, is just one of the two people shot and killed this week in Memphis.

Keith and another 22-year-old were both shot and killed in Binghampton.

Thursday there was a shooting on Scott Street that left a car's windows shattered.

"Statistics don't lie," Memphis Police Deputy Director Mike Ryalls said.

Ryalls said there are challenges to preventing homicides, but officers are working around the clock to solve each and every one.

"Homicides never go away," Ryalls said. "We never close them. We work diligently around the clock."

Ryalls is unable to confirm if the Binghampton shootings are gang related.

He said gangs and drugs play a part in the increasing homicide numbers.

"The drug culture is out there," Ryalls said. "The rival gangs are out there. The rival drug groups are out there."

He said the department is implementing programs to combat gangs and is also working to re-educate children on how to handle conflict.

"Children do what they see, and do what television tells them to do," Ryalls said.
