MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

If you are thinking about buying a car, a house, or even changing jobs, you need to check your credit report. Believe it or not, your credit report could determine everything from the car you drive to the job you get.

Mid-South credit expert Sherita Goodman says you need to look at your free credit report every year. Sherita recommends making sure everything on the report is accurate and can be verified.

To raise your credit report, Sherita says there is at least one thing you must do.

"If you haven't been paying on time, today you need to start paying on time," she recommended. "That's the number one thing you can do. Thirty-five percent of our score is based on payment history."

So, what’s the magic number when it comes to your credit report? Sherita says you need to have at least a 700 on your credit score. It will give you better opportunities, better rates when you try to buy a home or a car, better insurance rates, and may even be a factor in applying for a job.

Sherita, who is a credit counselor at Operation Home, knows what she's talking about. Operation Hope is a government program that helps provide consumers with information to improve their credit scores. Seventy-five percent of the people Sherita has worked with have been able to improve their credit scores. Operation Hope can be located inside First Tennessee bank branches.
