A 22-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after a crash on Interstate 240 southbound near Walnut Grove Road.

Police said Ashleigh Hayes' car swerved, hit a guardrail, and then hit a concrete wall on the other side of the road. She was taken to Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

"I saw a young lady staggering in the road,” witness Cathy Wood said. “Car smashed into the guard rail."

Wood said when she saw Hayes standing on 240, she had to pull over.

"I grabbed a picnic blanket and we laid her down and wrapped her in it to keep her from going into shock,” Wood said.

Police said Hayes will be cited for having no driver’s license and failing to maintain proper control.

James Claybrook said his daughter is doing OK, but suffered serious injuries in the crash.

"As a parent, it was hard. It was a massive facial injury,” he explained.

"From here over was ripped open,” he said, pointing across his face. “I don’t know if she had any teeth up here, too. There was just massive amounts of blood.”

Wood said witnesses did all they could to help Hayes. They even found her phone and called her parents to tell them what happened.

"She couldn’t speak very well,” Wood said. "We got the phone and she pointed at numbers on the phone.”

Claybrook said his daughter just graduated from The University of Memphis one week ago.

"You now have strangers who love you and care about you and are praying for you every day,” he said.
