OXFORD, MS (WMC) -

University of Mississippi celebrated its class of 2016 over the weekend with former NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw as the commencement speaker.

During his speech, Brokaw took a dig at a fellow SEC school.

"If I was speaking at Alabama, I'd have to use smaller words and shorter sentences,” he said.

In an interview with the school, Brokaw said he has become very fond of Oxford, MS.

In 2010, he was on campus as a guest lecturer.

“Mississippi has this great culture with history, politics, and a difficult time with race,” Brokaw said. “But it's moving on, which is the important part.”

He reminded the more than 4,000 graduates that though social media is a big part of their lives, experiences transcend anything that comes from an iPhone.

“No text will ever replace the first kiss,” Brokaw said.
