MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A commencement ceremony at Lemoyne-Owen College this weekend brought a surprise with big dollar signs.

FedEx donated $1,000,000 to improve the school's technology and another $100,000 in scholarships, according to Lemoyne-Owen Executive Director of Institutional Advancement Roger Brown.

He said the donation will go toward the technological infrastructure of the school, which means the money will be used to upgrade technology students use to register for classes, check grades, etc.

The changes will be in place as early as Fall 2016.

"It's the best thing to happen to us. It's such a great time in the history of Lemoyne-Owen College," Brown said.

This commencement was the first for the college's new president Andrea Lewis Miller.

Brown said this donation was Miller's dream, and it has now come true.

"A new president, new direction that FedEx would invest in," Brown said.

Students said they're ready for the upgrades.

"It would help me improve my grades, and have a better communication with my professors," student Clarnesha Leggins said.

Brown said this is one step closer to the college providing online classes.

In a statement FedEx said in part:

"Our contributions to LeMoyne-Owen, as well as support we give to the United Negro College Fund and other diverse educational initiatives, are investments in the next generation of leaders.”
