MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South and the WMC Action News 5 Investigators want to protect you from bogus bill collectors.

Randy Hutchinson says if you get a call from someone saying you owe them or a company money, don't ignore it.   Hutchinson says talk to the person on the other end of the line.  Ask them for proof you owe money, ask who you owe the money to, and what your options are.

Hutchinson says REAL bill collectors will provide the information to you right then or in writing within five business days.  If the so-called bill collector won't give you the information or threatens you, hang up.  The next thing you need to do is file a complaint.

Hutchinson says the bogus bill collectors play on people's emotions.  He says don't get intimidated and use these tips to protect yourself.
